Happy New Year!

This is the time of year that I tend to be super reflective and ecstatically positive all at the same time.  I enjoy the revisiting of great moments of our year and yet can't wait for the challenge to shed the old and bring on the new.

I am working on a family book for the year.  I would love by next year to have each child their own book for the year.  Just praying I can get my camera back in full commission and buy a new lens.

I have started back with the concept of year round homeschooling.  It worked so much better for my family.  Excited for the thought of not being tied down on the standard school schedule and so much more can be learned and experienced together.  I am going to try to post a home school post and link it to another blog that hosts a weekly wrap up every week.

I am determined to revisit my crafty side this year.  I used to do a lot and then I had kids.....well, that was my excuse.  Time to not let little hands, that destroy everything they can, get the best of me!  Ready to enjoy what those little hands can create.

BRING ON THE NEW YEAR......we have great plans!
We have memories to make!  We can't wait!

Christmas 2011

We had a beautiful Christmas this year.

The tree was trimmed.
The fire burned brightly.
The presents were delightful.
The cookies were yummy.

We spent time together and with family.

We didn't waste a moment enjoying each other.

Merry Christmas!

Tis the Season.....

The main family Christmas tree went up tonight.
The kids and I love, love, love decorating the tree and Toby tolerates the joy.

Toby thought he was so funny putting all his ornaments in one spot on the tree.

Kamryn made the the decorating VERY interesting.
With her help we only broke 3 balls and 2 ornaments.

We finally gave up and took all decorations off the bottom half of the tree.

The final product.
I was a little slanted when I took the picture....the tree is not leaning. :)

We are officially ready to celebrate the season!

Happy Thanksgiving

Our Little Sunshine

Thanksgiving just was not what I had in mind this year.  I had big plans, but what are plans anyway?  On Monday, Kamryn started running fever and by that night it was 105.7 before heading to the emergency room.  I have never had a child run a fever that high and we were very concerned.  We spent a horrible night in the ER.  It took five hours to see the Dr and only after a friend got ugly with them.  They had forgotten us.  The next day I took her to the pediatrician and he did the things that they should have done in the ER and determined it was Roseola.  We spent the week taking care of a very sick little girl and by Friday night the fever was gone and the rash had appeared.

Friday we celebrated with my family and Saturday with Toby's.  It is good to have my brother and his family living back in our state.  After 12 years, it was great to spend Thanksgiving with them and cheer LSU on to victory.

I am so grateful Thanksgiving  isn't one day giving thanks, good food, or football.  It is a year round attitude of gratitude.  So, today I celebrate Thanksgiving and tomorrow I will, too.  Even next June, when swimming and camps are all we can think about.   Deep inside I always want a heart of thanksgiving!

This Little Light of Mine......

I thought about titling this post, "Why Do I Attract These People?"  I decided against it for fear someone would read the post and think they recognized someone.  I do not live in a huge city, so there is a chance of this occuring.  Then, it felt as if the Lord was asking me, "What do I look like to people? What do people see in you?" Hopefully they see Jesus?

It all started Friday with an unusually early an unexpected arrival of a repairman.  He was supposed to have shown up a week ago, but in his usually BUSY schedule he had not been able to get by here.  I was still in my pj's, hair uncombed, drinking my coffee while listening to the conversations, laughter, and excitement of my kids.  So when the doorbell rang, I sent my oldest son to the door, while I made a super mad dash up the stairs to try to look presentable in 0.3 seconds.  Upon coming back down the stairs, I launched into a picking fuss with this good natured repairman for showing up without calling me.  Since we have known him for awhile, we chatted about family, adoption, church, and finding your place in ministry.  After he finished his repairs, he leaned up against the counter in the kitchen and his first reaction was "What in the world?"  The counter top and cabinets were hot to the touch.  The dishwasher has been having problems, like parts flying off at me, but now the heating element had not turned off the night before.  It was still heating and becoming a fire hazard.  So, he unhooked it for me, and it was the hand of the Lord that he had been to busy to come by last week.

About two hours later, a repairman for a local appliance store showed up unannounced to work on the "fire hazard" dishwasher.  He proved to be a know-it-all ex church member that not only criticized our church, but several others in the area, in front of my kids.  I had tried to be nice when he showed up and was  really taken off guard at his response.  At that point, I realized that anything I said was the wrong thing, so I stopped talking to him and only answered him in one word answers.  He prattled on and on about different topics and his resentment and bitterness kept showing through.  Thankfully my sweet husband showed up part of the way through this man's repair job, and his demeanor changed drastically.  I let hubby deal with him, but the sad news is it will be December before I have a working dishwasher again.  Even sadder is that this man is carrying baggage around with him that is eating away at his spirit.

Three hours later the third repairman of the day arrived.  His was a scheduled visit, so I was expecting his interruption.  He was very nice, but proved just as interesting.  He was also a talker, and in the fifteen minutes he was here, I learned that he was a fan on one of our pastors, what he thought about homeschooling, his thoughts on adoption, was an ex church member, wanted to know about making bread (he heard the bread machine going), told me where and all about the church he goes to now (2 1/2 hours away), caught up on how everyone was doing that he knows in our church, and told me where he lived.

Maybe I should have been a counselor or interrogator, since I can get a life story from someone in 15 minutes.   Why do people feel the need to automatically start asking about church or church related topics when they enter my home?  Do they feel something when they come around that makes them desire to have more of Him?  I do not want to be like repairman #2....where my "light" is one of bitterness and pain.   I am hoping that they see Him working in me.  That my "light" shines and points them toward Him. I want to be a witness of His good works and let His "light" shine into the lives of others.

"You are the light that gives light to the world.  A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden. And people don't hide a light under a bowl. They put it on a lamp stand so the light shines for all the people in the house. In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see good things you do and will praise you Father in heaven."  Matthew 5:14-16  (New Century Version)

As a mom, there are days I am so busy that I do not realize how my "light" looks to others.  Sometimes it takes three repairmen and a random Friday to remind me.

A Trip to the Farm

We love field trips!  Love the getting out and learning new things without realizing that we are learning.  Today we packed a lunch and headed 1 hr. 15 min. away to visit a farm with a lot of activities.  They had a huge pillow jump, wagon ride, tractor train, petting zoo, corn maze, and more.   The 9 and 6 year old had a ball, but the two oldest were not as impressed.  Seems that I am having a harder time finding things that fit the interests of everyone.  It wasn't a total loss, because the oldest did seem to enjoy the tether ball and just being outside.

Are They Trying to Kill Me?

It is still quiet this morning.  Except for the occasional bump from upstairs where hubby is getting dressed or the sound of my son sweeping around the backdoor, all are still snoozing.  I have such good intentions of rising early, waking my children, and getting our mornings started before 8 am.  I read other mom's blogs that really pull that off and I always wonder how.  Oh, we occasionally surprise even me, but that is rare.  I guess I should just realize we are not morning people, except for the hubby, which really makes me not like him much before coffee in the mornings.  Cue "morning person" talking on his phone while coming down the stairs....come on, the baby is still asleep.

Last night was one of those nights where I ended up sandwiched between two little girls, while my darling husband slept soundly snoring in happy bliss.  By 3:30 am, I had had enough of the snoring, kicking, squashing me and went and got in Kensli's bed.  I laid there forever, praying and hoping it would lull me back to sleep.  At 5 something I gave up and got up.  I sometimes wonder if they are conspiring to wipe me out by sleep deprivation.

Kensli seems to be dealing with some separation anxiety again.  It used to be really bad and was accompanied with night terrors, but now it manifests itself by coming and getting in my bed during the night.  I am grateful for what we have overcome, but will be so thankful for the day when she has doesn't have these fears.

So, I am working on my second cup of strong coffee, sitting quietly, trying to muster all the energy I can to get this day going.  We have a missions function at my house tonight.  Thankfully I am a night owl, so I will be catching my stride about the time of the party. (Several cups of coffee should help the situation, too.) Oh, and should the asteroid hit Earth tonight, I will be fully awake to watch, observe, and hopefully get out of the way!

Weekend Wrap-up

IT'S MONDAY!!!!!  I am writing this with a cup of coffee close by!  It may take more than one this morning.  Our weekend was busy and fun with birthday parties, friends, football games, and church.

Friday Night--

Ricky went with a friend and Joseph, an intern from our church, to pass out sleeping bags to the homeless.  When he got home you could tell he felt like he had helped make a difference in the lives of a few people.

The rest of us spent a quiet evening at home, with a fire in the fire pit and roasted marshmallows.  YUM!!!!

Saturday--

  •  Kaitlyn volunteered at the local soup kitchen where she helped prepare and serve food to those in need. They served over one hundred people.  There was a couple of Spanish speaking people that came through the line and Kaitlyn tried to talk to them, but she said they didn't seem friendly.
  • I love birthday parties unless they are on a Saturday afternoon at Chuckie Cheese.  Oh, wow, the noise level even bothered my two oldest and youngest.  The other two littles did not seem to mind since they were part of the NOISE.  One of our Spanish families youngest daughter turned 1.  She is so cute and the cake was amazing.  I took pictures for the parents.
  • Got home just in time for the LSU vs Alabama kick-off and hamburgers.  We had a some friends over and they had already started the party, with my husbands help, when I got home.  We had so much fun laughing and talking.
Sunday--

I am not a great fan of the time change.  I am a warm weather gal and the time changing means the dreaded cold is returning.  Also, the extra hour of sleep means absolutely nothing to me!

Church was good, though.  We moved Sunday School classrooms, yet again, but this move seems for the better.  It was just a little more chaotic, but next Sunday we should have it all worked out and be back to normal.

Looking forward to the week and all the blessings that come with it.

HAPPY MONDAY!!!!!

New Blog Look

OK, it is blogger template not a fancy designer look, but is works for me at the moment.  I have a hard time not growing bored with what I have, so this might just be the best alternative.  I will not feel that I am wasting money every time I decide I am tired of the look.

I figured out how to add tabs, too.  Not sure about them at this time, but I am working on learning and thinking about what to add to these pages.  I will be adding allergy awareness sites and homeschooling links under their tabs along with things I have discovered and found that works for us.  If I have to, I may just create separate blogs, just not sure how it will work best.

I am checking all links and blogs, that I have linked to my blog, to make sure they are still working.  If I had your blogged linked and it is being updated regularly, I will be adding it back.  If it hasn't been updated in over 6 months, I will keep it under my profile just in case you do post.

I have re-entered the blog world and feel I do have a few experiences to share.  I am ready to write and share our world once more.

Our New Toy

What my kitchen looks like this morning.

Cooking takes up a lot of time lately and making bread has practically take over my kitchen.  We are like mad scientists trying to re-invent our little wheel, due to allergies.  I am grateful for our church that gave our family a bread machine for pastor appreciation.  It has been a lifesaver.  We average making two loaves of bread a day.  That seems like a lot of bread, but we are a family of 7, plus anyone else that happens to drop by during the day.

This morning I am making cinnamon bread without the bread machine.  It is looking and smelling so good.  I can't wait to sample it with a cup of coffee when it comes out of the oven.  I am sending one of the loaves to Toby's office.  Guess you could call it my good deed for the day.

October 31st

We have never made it a habit to celebrate Halloween, but this year we were invited to a Boo Party and throughly enjoyed ourselves.

We ate, trick-or-treated, made an edible halloween treat, and wrapped it up with our candy and a movie outside.  It reminded me of the carnivals and parties that I attended as a kid.

Kamryn as a Ladybug

The Candy Gang

Off to get our buckets full.

Working on our edible treat.

Kaitlyn joined in making the treats.

 Kaitlyn's treat.

Nicholas' treat started to run.  We laughed at the nose almost falling off.

Kamryn made her rounds trying to get candy out of everyone's bucket.
They did a good job of helping keep her out of the their candy.

So Kamryn would not feel left out, I had her some organic fruit juice suckers.
She seemed a little more pleased after that.

We had so much fun.  Hope everyone else had a great October 31st.

Just Crazy

LIFE has been just plain crazy for months now. Taking care of my family, school, church, and home keep me so busy I really do not have time to blog anymore.  I have tried and can't seem to keep up.

I have thought about ending my blog, but can't seem to bring myself to do so.  For now, due to time restraints, I will not be able to post often.

If I still have readers, please forgive me.  Maybe one day life will slow down, the baby will sleep all night, I can cook wonderful meals free of all allergens, all events organized weeks in advance, and I will have lots of time to sit, ponder, and blog.  If that happens, it will be to boring to blog.  Oh, well, we are really living the good life.

Learning How to Cook All Over Again

A few month ago I only had to worry about a nut allergy, but now we have added milk and soy to our list of things to watch for. Kamryn can't tolerate soy or lactose, so our choices are really limited.   I was shocked at the amount of things that contain soy, but what really frustrated me was that not all warning labels are accurate.

I know preparing all meals from scratch is the healthiest way to go, but it isn't easy or fast.  Forget running through the local burger joint and grabbing something on the way to the ball field.  Honestly, it is hard when you are NOT used to thinking about the food preparation quite as much.  I am trying my best and learning how to cook in an all new healthier way.

I am proud of myself though.  I made Kamryn's 1st birthday cake from scratch without any soy or lactose in the ingredients.  That is actually tasted great and looked nice was a bonus.  My next thing to try is making my own beef and chicken stock to freeze.

I am learning and we will be the better for the changes.  I just wish someone would invent a allergen free drive through that sells nut, soy, and lactose free burgers and fries for those crazy days that I am running to get places.

Happy Gotcha Day

I can't believe that it has been a year since Kamryn joined our family. Seems like just yesterday, yet she has grown so much.  Honestly, I can't really remember what she was like those first few days.  Thank the Lord for pictures to help you recall those memories.

She turned 1 last Friday, which is very hard to believe, too. I look at her in amazement and wonder, loving to see her grow, yet wanting to hold on to every moment.  Knowing she is the baby of the family is bittersweet.

Kamryn's Accomplishments include:

  • clapping excitedly when you say, "patty cake, patty cake"
  • knowing how to turn her daddy's computer off when he is in the middle of typing
  • deleting apps off of our iPhones
  • calls me "Mommy" and everyone else "MA"
  • Can say "Hey", "Bye", "Daddy", "no,no", & "wove you", but only when she wants to say them
  • can take a few steps, but crawling is her method for getting anywhere quickly
  • screams when things are taken away from her and thinks everything is hers
  • loves any kind of remote
  • thinks our bed is the best place in the world to sleep
  • loves Italian opera and Latino worship music
  • can feed the dog her peas and carrots without you realizing until you notice the dog circling her chair

She is FUN, and FUNNY.

Today we celebrate!!!!
Happy 1st Gotcha Day, Kamryn.

Road Trip 2011~DAYS 7-9

 Columbus, OH

Monday

COSI Science Museum

Columbus has one of the nicest Science Museums I have ever been to.  All the hands on exhibits made this museum a huge hit. It had so many different sections that we did not get to see it all.

One of the kids favorite sections was Space.

Kensli on the Space potty.

Kamryn really enjoying herself!!

They could go down in this sub.  So cool!

My favorite section was the one called Progress.  It showed the progress the country made during the 40's thru the 60's.

Ricky and Kaitlyn at the 50's dinner.

Old gas station with VW Bug.

Toby as the nightly news anchor.
You could actually read the script and watch as it showed on the screen.

The last section we got to visit was the gadgets sections.  So much to do here that we ran out of time as they were announcing the museum closing time.  Would love to see the rest of this museum one day.

The kids discovering how pulleys work.

Tuesday

Columbus Zoo

The zoo was another huge place that we ran out of time viewing.  We did not get to see everything, but we covered as much as we could.  This is one of the zoos that Jack Hanna is affiliated with, so it is exceptional.  Extremely hands on and many places to see all the animals up close.  I think my favorite animal to see was the polar bears.  I have never seen one except in magazines and on TV.

Kamryn looking at the horses in the petting zoo.

Part of our crew taking a break inside the petting zoo.

After the zoo we went to a restaurant to eat called Shades.  It is on the Ohio and Erie Canal.

Wednesday

Amish Country

We have never been to an Amish community before and we decided to visit while we were only a couple of hours away.  It was beautiful!!!!

On the way we stopped and saw the Longaberger Basket offices and factory. It is shaped in a huge basket.

When we finally got to Amish country, we saw some of the neatest, most beautiful farms and country side.

Our first stop was Heini's Cheese factory.  They make their cheese and you can take a tour, but they were not making any at the time.  One of the neatest things is you could taste most of the cheeses.  The kids really loved this part, especially Kensli.

Kensli was not intimidated by other people.  When she saw a cheese she wanted to taste, she would fight her way between adults even.

This was a very unusual sight....pulling a hay baler with mules.  It seemed to work well, because we watched them bale a roll of hay.

We stopped here for a little bit of desert.  I had the best peach pie I have ever eaten.

A lot of the buildings looked liked they were in Switzerland or Austria.

I am so glad we drove the two hours to see this beautiful area and its beautiful people.  It is the largest group of Mennonites and Amish in the country.  It consists of 3 communities and many farms in between.

I said in my last post we were leaving on Tuesday, but it seemed that every time we tried to leave the pastor and his family had a reason for us not to go.  Tomorrow is definite travel day and we head out for Chicago.  Can't wait to visit the Windy City for the first time ever.

Road Trip 2011~DAYS 3-6

Columbus, OH

On Friday of last week, we left Chattanooga, TN and headed north to Columbus, OH.  It was a beautiful drive through the Appalachian Mountains. Unfortunately and fortunately, the baby slept and slept so we did not stop to take pictures.

We have been so busy since getting to Columbus that I have not found time to update the blog.  We are staying on the church campus, which is 52 acres of fun for the kids.

From the back of the property by the pond.
The steeple in the middle is the church.

The first night here they built a huge bonfire.  This is unheard of in Louisiana this time of the year, but the weather is so nice and cool in the evenings that you just want to be outside.  The first night the kids were outside until after midnight playing with other kids.

There is a pond beside the house and apartment.  There are 4 ducks that live in the pond and they are so funny to watch. They waddle up and steal dog food from the pastor's dogs if you do not watch them.  They are shooed back by anyone around at the time, only to come waddling back if they think no one is watching.

On Saturday we visited a huge mall called the Easton Mall.  It was beautiful.  There were fountains, and water pads, a fireman exhibition was going on, and sailboats to rent and sail by remote.

Kensli and Jillian, the pastor's daughter, ended up in the sailboat fountain.

The kids have so enjoyed this place.  There are two playgrounds, basket ball, catch and release fishing, bonfires at night, riding bicycles, room to run, ducks to chase, two beagles, and a revolving group of kids to meet and play with at anytime of the day.

In the evenings the fireflies have been a huge interest to the kids.  We do not have fireflies at home like we did when I was a kid.  I think the mosquito spraying has wiped them out over the years.

Kamryn enjoying some time outside.

Yesterday was Sunday and we had awesome church services.  After the morning service, Kaitlyn and Ricky went and helped with a children's music video.  Kaitlyn actually ended up performing with the kids.  She said it was awesome. The church family has taken the kids in and have included them in everything, and this has made our stay much more like a vacation. We ended the day with a powerful move of God in the mission's service.

Today we are going to see some things around here.  One thing I would like to see is the Erie Canal and a cave they say is interesting. Can't wait to see what today brings.

Road Trip 2011~DAY 2

Chattanooga, TN

Breakfast with a Dear Friend

This morning we went and visited a dear friend an her daughter for bagels and coffee.  Had never been to her house, and it was beautiful.  Her view was spectacular.  Sadly, I did not take pictures and would not have posted them anyway to respect her privacy.  It was a wonderful time of catching up.

Lookout Mountain

Spectacular views, beautiful gardens, a scary swinging bridge, large rock formations, and narrow places make Rock City a very "magical adventure" just like the brochure says.  We had so much fun that this will be a must see again in a few years.

One of the only drawbacks was that we could not use the stroller for Kamryn.  Toby had to carry her the entire time and I had the dreaded diaper bag.  We survived and had a great time anyway.

Toby and Kamryn trying to squeeze through the Eye of the Needle.

Kamryn was not impressed with her Dad's abilities to squeeze through tight places.

Top of Lookout Mountain
You can see 7 states from here.

Kamryn and Dad with waterfall in the background.

Love this picture.  We had stopped for a water break and Kamryn did not want the water just the bottle.

Ruby Falls

We stopped and toured the cavern and falls on Lookout Mountain.  I am not sure I would do this attraction again anytime soon.  We hiked approximately a mile down, 1120 feet,  into the cavern to the falls and it was not a real pleasant trip.  Although cool, it was damp, dark, crowded, and slippery.  We had to stop and let other groups pass many times.  Not easy while carrying a squirming baby that was not real interested in the adventure.  Even without the baby, there was just not enough to see to justify paying for tickets again soon.  Summing up this little adventure, "glad we went, but been there, done that."

Kaitlyn took this picture of the waterfall.
It was not very big, but it was pretty with all the lights.

Tomorrow we are off to Columbus, OH.
